FUSE/INDIAN SUMMER
FESTIVAL
Vancouver Art Gallery
In the summer of 2016, the Vancouver Art Gallery hosted a special edition of FUSE, its signature after-hours event that transforms the Gallery into a dynamic space for art, music, and live performance. That year’s theme, PRIVATE LIVES/PUBLIC DREAMS, responded to the concerns of the exhibitions on view and explored the intersections of the personal, the political, the fantastic, and the mythical.
The event featured an array of immersive experiences throughout the Gallery, including live performances within exhibition spaces, multiple DJs across several floors, and a brass band performing on the front steps. Large-scale projections illuminated both the Gallery’s rotunda and surrounding buildings, while unexpected artistic interventions activated various areas of the venue. The evening offered a multi-sensory experience, drawing in diverse audiences and showcasing contemporary art in new and engaging ways.
For the design of the event collateral and promotional materials I used contemporary Indian street art and vintage Bollywood album cover art as inspiration for the creative. I wanted to create collage art that represented the breadth and diversity of the event along with paying homage to the boldness and roots of Indian culture.
