Future Vancouver Art Gallery Campaign
Vancouver Art Gallery
The Vancouver Art Gallery secured land and city approval for the development of a new gallery in downtown Vancouver. I played a key role in a large-scale civic and fundraising campaign that involved numerous components and stakeholders. As a designer, I contributed across many facets of the campaign, collaborating with a range of teams and partners:
City Proposals with Senior Directors and Consultants: I worked on creating the cover and insert pages for the proposal the Vancouver Art Gallery had to submit to the City of Vancouver in order to secure funding and rights to develop the land. The cover was a text-based design, incorporating key words associated with the mandate of the Gallery, the typography utilized knock-out text to play with the idea of envisioning the future and seeing the words through the location typography.
Managing the RFP process and submissions: I developed the submission system and guidelines the firms had to follow to put in their bids for the new gallery project. I had to manage the submission process of the proposals that came in, vet and organize them for review, and be in correspondence with the architectural firms etc., and senior management
Art Makes Us Campaign with 123West Agency: I had to work with senior management in a consultant role for the creative concept for Art Makes Us, the main public facing fundraising and public support campaign for the new gallery. We worked with the agency 123West for the branding of Art Makes Us. It was a huge 360 campaign, with video ads, posters, transit ads, email campaigns, and a microsite. I took the main branding created and made marketing collateral from it for the gallery’s various marketing needs and channels. I adapted the design for various purposes and created new versions of it depending on the context of its use.
Future Vancouver Art Gallery Microsite: Although the original version has since been replaced, the foundation we built remains evident in the updated version: Future Vancouver Art Gallery. I collaborated with an information architect and an external development team to create the site. I created wireframes for the site layout, navigation, and content structure, which were then handed off to the developers for implementation.
Design & Promotions with Herzog & de Meuron: I worked on the posters and campaigns for the public events and exhibition Material Future that the selected architectural firm, Herzog & de Meuron were involved in. In some cases original designs were created by me, in other cases it was working closely with their office to adapt and develop their various designs into marketing collateral for the campaign events and promotional items. I also relaunched/redesigned the Members newsletter, renamed as Art Makes Us, and this building design by the architects was what inspired the publication design.
